Many new drivers do not fully realize the importance of taking driving seriously, and sometimes that disregard causes serious accident, injuries, and death. You will not be able to control the other motorists, but there are many things you can do to protect yourself.
One of the most basic things that you can do is to get in the habit and stay in the habit of putting on your seat belt. It takes as much time to buckle up as it does to start the car. Most states have a click it or ticket policy as a monetary incentive if personal safety is not reason enough. When you get into the car, even if you were the last person to drive it, check both the side and review mirrors. They may have gotten bumped and need some readjusting. If you are getting into a car that someone else drove, make sure to adjust the seat prior to starting the car.
You are still learning to drive, whatever the license may say. There are many things you have not done yet and still need to learn. Remove all distractions. If you are listening to music or talking, keep the volume to a reasonable level. Do not change the song and drive simultaneously. Wait until a red light, stop sign, or just tune out the song; it won’t last forever.
Regardless of how you feel, that call or text is not that important. Leave it until you reach your destination. Do not call out, accept a call, or text (including reading them) while you are driving.
If it is that important, put your hazard lights on and pull over. Don’t eat or drink while driving, particularly if it contains alcohol. If you are newly licensed and have consumed alcohol, do not drive.
Once you are on the road, stick to the speed limit. Speeding tickets can be a very expensive lesson in driving. You may think that speeding looks cool, but the number of accidents caused by speeding is tragic. Practice parking. It is a good way to spare your car from dings and scratches. Another tricky aspect is driving at night or in bad conditions. If possible, have someone more experienced drive during less than ideal conditions or be in the car with you while you learn.
